For schools and families:
Emotional Intelligence for Kids:
Teaching children how to recognise their emotions, manage stress, and build social skills.
Creative Writing and Emotional Growth:
If you feel that your child’s emotional intelligence is not improving as expected or if they seem to be struggling with specific aspects, I am here to help. Sometimes, children may have difficulty expressing their emotions, understanding others’ feelings, or regulating their own emotional responses. Through creative writing, we can address these challenges and help your child develop key emotional intelligence skills.
I offer online sessions that typically last around 30 minutes. In each session, we focus on various techniques that use creative writing as a means of exploring and enhancing emotional growth. Some of the methods I use include:
Writing Prompts:
These are designed to encourage self-reflection, where your child can explore their emotions in a structured way. For example, a prompt might ask, “Describe a time when you felt happy and why,” or “Write a letter to a character expressing how you feel about a situation.” These activities help children articulate their emotions more clearly and increase their emotional awareness.
Storytelling and Role Play:
Encouraging children to create characters and stories allows them to step into someone else’s shoes. This helps develop empathy as they understand different perspectives, experiences, and emotions. Writing stories also gives children the chance to safely explore difficult or confusing emotions through fictional characters.
Emotional Vocabulary Building:
Writing can be used to expand a child’s emotional vocabulary, helping them label and better understand their feelings. For example, rather than simply writing “I am sad,” they might explore more specific emotions, such as “I feel disappointed” or “I feel frustrated.” This supports emotional awareness and regulation.
Reflective Journaling:
In some cases, I will encourage your child to keep a journal where they can reflect on their daily experiences and how they made them feel. Writing down their emotions at the end of each day can help them process events and develop emotional regulation strategies.
Constructive Feedback and Discussion:
After your child completes their writing, I provide constructive feedback, discussing their work and helping them reflect on what they’ve expressed. This conversation encourages open communication, helping them develop their ability to express their thoughts and feelings effectively.
Building Self-Esteem and Confidence:
As children see their writing improve and understand their emotions more clearly, they gain confidence in their ability to express themselves and manage their feelings. This positive reinforcement can also enhance their sense of self-worth and emotional resilience.
These sessions are designed to be flexible and tailored to your child’s specific needs. By using creative writing as a tool, we can work together to strengthen various aspects of emotional intelligence, whether it’s improving emotional expression, boosting empathy, or enhancing emotional regulation. I aim to create a safe and supportive environment where your child can grow emotionally, learn new strategies for managing their feelings, and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
